ICP is not, strictly speaking, a method related to AAS.

ICP is an emission spectroscopy technique and uses a plasma torch to

AAS is absorption spectroscopy, where the specific source spectrum is

absorbed by the sample.

ICP is both qualitative AND quantitative, AAS is normally quantitative
only. The detection limit for ICP is 1000 times lower than for AAS (ppb
rather than ppm).
So.not VERY alike at all, really...

AAS is an important analytical tool enabling the chemist to measure very

small quantities of metals in an analyte.

It works by using an acetylene flame (commonly but there are other
methods) to heat a sample of material & vaporise the metal in the sample.

If the element to be analysed is sodium, a lamp containing sodium is
energised & light of wavelengths characteristic for sodium are emitted.
This light is then passed through the sample in the flame & some of it is
absorbed by sodium in the sample. The quantity of light absorbed is
proportional to the concentration of metal in the sample. Hence the name
Atomic Absorbtion & Spectroscopy because the instrument used is
essentially a spectroscope.

Because an energy source (lamp) can be made of a large range of metallic
elements & non-metallic ones & because the spectrum emitted is specific
for each element, the method is suitable for measuring a wide range of
elements in complex matrices.

Modern instruments scan automatically a large number of elements providing
a rapid & automated method analysis.

Related methods are Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) & Graphite Furnace
technology.

O.K. drjaycat, fare enough.

I was trying to point out in a simple way that both are capable of
analysing for a wide range of elements in complex matrices.

True that AAS uses light absorbed & ICP uses light emitted but both rely
on the use of spectra being specific to an element.
